  Soon I will be recieving ASCII data from another company to update logs for our contractors.(~500 records a day)

  Before I can update the log data I have to check to see if I have the contractor ID. if not add the record for him before adding his logs. My question is whats the best way of going about this? I do not think I can do it with DTS because you can not check a field and do stuff with it. I was thinking maybe reading it through t-sql. Can someone point me in the right direction?

  Use DTS. I'd load into a staging table and then use T-SQL to do the work, but call it from DTS.
