Anything by Ben Forta will be pretty good.
Try SAMS' Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, or Teach Yourself Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL in 10 Minutes.
Both good books to start with.
Good luck!

Both of the ten minute books are good as well as the old 24 hr books. For a good understanding of the SQL language and plenty of practical excersizes check out:

This is the book I spent my first shaky months at my first SQL job getting to grips with SQL, also figuring out the nuances of ten pin bowling, all the excersizes are bases on a bowling league:->

Where you looking for a free book?

I don't know of any free books, but I'd recommend that if this is for your career, spend a little $$ and support the people that write them.
You can also go here: http://www.sqlshare.com/ for some basic SQL videos, or here: http://www.w3schools.com/sql/default.asp
