System Database directory at Install

  • I'm running my first real SQL 2017 (Dev edition) install and find that I can't seem to deliberately place the system database files (aside from tempdb) in a location of my choosing. When I name the instance (the default / named instance install page) the path is auto-named with no edit boxes available. When I get to the Server Configuration page, I can alter everything but the "System database directory" line.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Also, I'm installing Analysis Services for the first time. If I'm reading my Google links right, the server mode is "hardset," IE, Microsoft doesn't provide a way to change the server mode naturally, once it's installed. Correct?

I am seeing a fudge or two listed in the results but they appear to be user-created workarounds rather than official Microsoft fixes. Please let me know if I'm correct or incorrect on this later bit.

  • No, I have not found a place to move the system databases.

I let the install finish, and move them as part of the post-install steps

  • It is doable but must be done through regedit and careful scripting.

  • That's what I thought. Thanks.
