sysadmin database-level permissions

  • Would there be a reason to explicitly add Username to msdb (or any other database for that matter) if Username is already assigned the sysadmin server role?

I thought not, but I'm seeing occurrences of it all over our system with nothing more granular being added or taken away. Seems pointless.

  • could it be a legacy of a normal user who got access to multiple databases, and then someone upgraded them to sysadmin, because they needed more and more access to multiple dbs?

  • If user is member of sysadmin fixed server role they can perform any activity in the server.

There is no meaning of mapping user explicitly to msdb database.
