Syllabus for Beginners

  • Hi all,

I'm an Oracle DBA ,but planning to learn Sql server Administration.

So for a beginner , can i know the topics and the order of study .

Thank u all so much in advance.

  • Hi, I'm trying this way too and I follow my own ideas.

First I suppose it's better to expertise with the Database Backup & Restore.

There is a lot of documentation on Internet.

It's a couple of week that I amuse myself with creating and destroying Databases ... he he he.

The second step I'll do, will be the security access to a Databases.

    Good job

  • Get a SQL Server 2005 book and read through it. It's ordered, logical, and gives you a framework.

If you're managing servers, get backups/restores down. These are important. I'd agree Security next, and then I might dig into server memory/options. After that, see where your job takes you.

  • Absolutely true.

I'm moving my first steps in DBA work in these fisrt 2008.

One morning I waked up and I seed the way I had to run.

  • I go with Steve's suggestion, and you won't go far wrong with the Inside SQL Server... books and SQL Server 2005 Administrators Companion as a start.

  • BOL also has some good tutorials. And if you don't have access to SQL Server at the moment, you can either download the eval version of 2k5 or (recommended) buy the Developer version of SQL 2k5. The Developer version is cheap and you should be able to get it just about anywhere. Provantage.com is the site I recommend. They have some good specials. http://www.provantage.com/scripts/search.dll?QUERY=SQL+Server+2005

Playing with SQL Server on a test machine is something I recommend. You can't learn SQL just by reading the books. So grab the Dev version, set it up on a non-production box, and go to town with either BOL or the books you buy.

BTW, latest version of Books Online (BOL) can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=19db0b42-a5b2-456f-9c5c-f295cdd58d7a&displaylang=en.

  • I started as an Oracle DBA as well. The administration tasks for any database are always the same. Backups, tuning, security... It is just learning how to perform those tasks on a new database platform that is different. When I started with SQL Server, I got a training DVD, read books online, played around on a test server, and found this great web forum called SQLServerCentral.com. I think the latter helped the most, when ever I got stuck with something someone was always there to help. 😀

  • Hi,

Thank u all for ur valuable requests which r all encouraging me.

Now I'm sure I can get good hands on Sql Dba and i wish this helping hand would continue.

    thanx again
