Switching from Bulk-logged to Full Recovery Mode

  • Hi,

I need help in understanding the requirements for switching recovery models. Books Online states that one need not take a backup before switching from full recovery mode to bulk-logged mode. But if bulk operations take place while one is in bulk-logged mode, then you cannot recovery to the point when you switched from full to bulk-logged mode. This impedes point in time recovery, or doesn't it? I would highly appreciate if somebody clarified.

  • It does impede point in time recovery, but it does allow recovery to the last transaction log as well as recovery afterwards.

Perhaps you might describe your problem as you seem to be very worried about setting up your server for recovery. It seems that your questions show you don't have a great understanding or confidence in SQL Server. If you explain what you are trying to accomplish or deal with, perhaps we can help you.

  • Steve,

I greatly apologize if my questions have disturbed you or other people. The fact is that I am currently in the process of learning SQL Server. I am not a DBA yet (will soon become one in my company). But right now, as I read the documentation and as I read my book, I keep questioning everything. The sole intent behind this approach is to acquire a solid understanding of Microsoft's flagship database. And the more I am reading about SQL Server, the more confidence I am developing in the technology along with an appreciation for it. So please do not get me wrong here. I just intend to clarify my concepts to be able to become a better DBA in the forthcoming years. I hope you understand. Thanks.

  • That's what I thought and no offense. The questions seem a little silly to me sometimes because I have worked with them for so long and you are questioning things that we often have no control over, but it's ok.

    That's why we're here

Besides, you make us go back and rethink things to be sure we understand them as well as point out some interesting writings in the documentation that could be made clearer.

  • As Steve mentions - Backup and Recovery are key to any Database.  Before you decide what revovery model your database should run it - you need to get a a good grasp on the each of the three recovery models.  BOL is a good starting point as well as there are 100's of insigts on it here in Sqlcentral.com and other sources online.  Once you have that information - you will need to understand your DB, which you will manage and based on that decide which model to run in.  Good luck with your learning process and welcome to the World of SQL Server.
