Survey: Number of Beers per Power Outage?

  • IT minion "accidently" killed UPS power to half of my servers this morning. (Not supposed to be able to happen, but Murphy!)

So two/thirds of the projects are being delayed while various things recover, etc...

So while we stare at various status screens and SSMS consoles, a debate ensures whether or not this outage is worth 2 beers or 3 beers at the end of the week. I'm thinking it's two really good premium pints, no cheap mass produced swill.

  • I'd go up to four. 😎

    General Disclaimer:
Are you seriously taking the advice and code from someone from the internet without testing it? Do you at least understand it? Or can it easily kill your server?

How to post data/code on a forum to get the best help: Option 1 / Option 2
  • Differential Beers due to outage: (4-(Tier of the affected Server))*(number of "is it done yet" calls from users)*( number of functions affected) / (# of dba's on call)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Since I'm an "Accidental DBA" & "Jack of All Trades", (and not much of a drinker), I'm thinking two should cover the damage.

Thankfully we have some awesome locally breweries in the DFW area. I also have a rum/bourbon/whiskey distillery within walking distance of my house. But I can't bring my dog in, so the household budget is safe. (But I might swap a bottle(s) for training or job lead that gets me working where the UPSes have shields over the buttons.)

Careful, when the servers finally do come back online, hopefully the database team won't be slumped face down on their desks snoozing. Or do you mean four beers afterward. 🙂

Or leaning back in their chairs, passed out. I hope they mean afterwards, but I don't think that helps with the stress or the "is it done yet" calls.

Matt sure does have a nice formula to calculate the quantity. It's almost like he's done this before. 😉

  • The IT minion should have to buy the rounds. Personally, it sounds like a two tequila shot and one beer day to me.

  • I'm thinking a nice steak would work in addition to the beers...

Steak, 20oz margaritas, and Mexican sombreros should help take the edge off.
