I'm trying to run the Surface Area Configuration against a server in a clustered environment. I verified that remote access and remote admin connection is enabled (set to 1 with sp_configure) and I'm connecting to the cluster address (virtual machine name or the IP) but I'm still getting the error "You cannot configure surface area of clustered services by connecting to the computer name. Connect to the virtual server to configure clustered services".
Can anyone give me some direction?

When you are running the Surface Area Configuration are you trying to connect via the IP address or the virtual server name? I found I was able to connect when I used the vitual server name as opposed to the IP address

I've tried both and received the same error.

Are you trying to connect using the Virtual OS name/VIP or Virtual SQL Name/VIP? It should be the Virtual SQL Name or Virtual SQL VIP.

I've tried both the virtual IP and virtual server name for the sql server on the cluster; I'm not using using either node ip or machine names. SAC is recognizing the server as I can see all the parameters to change. But when I select one of them, I receive the error mentioned above.

The only way I get the error that you're getting is if I go into SAC and don't change localhost computer and do a local connection. When I click on a feature, I get the error you're getting. If I go back to SAC and change to remote connection, enter my SQL cluster virtual name as the computer name, then I can click on a feature with no problem.
To me, it seems like SAC isn't recognizing your virtual SQL server name in the cluster for some reason. Sorry that I can't provide more help.
