Hi all,
Require your suggestion in upgrading the sql server 2000 personal edition to sql server 2000 Enterprise edition. As in the microsoft web site they recomend that sql server 2000 personal edition cannot be directly upgraded to Enterprise edition. You have to move in this way: SQL SERVER 2000 Personal Edition -> Standard Edition -> Enterprise Editon.
But i don't want to do this kind of upgradation. Other alterative of this is take full backup of all the databases and DTS packages and uninstall sql server 2000 from the machine and install sql server 2000 enterprise edition and restore all the databases
but i have a doubt we r using 4 linked server and accociated jobs with the existing linked server's and i have user name and pwd of only 2 linked server. Will other 2 linked server effect by this ? and all jobs related to these linked server can effect ?
The third option we have either to install named instance of sql server 2000 enterprise edition Can it is possible ? and apply side by side restoration of the database's. so that if there is any problem we can rollback. ..
So my friends any other alternative you have please share with me........
what option you suggest for this upgrade ?

That's really it. Your options are as you've outlined.
It shouldn't be a problem with the upgrade as you're really running the same version, just changing features. Whether you uninstall or side by side, you're going to need the linked server passwords to set them up on the new instance. If you don't have them, you need them. They're needed in a disaster situation, so get them changed or find them. Stupid to have any excuse for not knowing them.
The two upgrades in place is a pain and it should be ok, but I don't like it either.
