I have a customer report that has a lot of fields that are displayed above a tablix. Is putting the tablix in a subreport the only way I can get the customer report to page break every time the customer changes.

You can enable the Page Break Before or After in the Customer Group's properties. That should fix that, or am I misunderstanding your query?

I made the mistake of returning the customer data with the detail data thinking that when the customer data changed I would get a page break. Since I am only displaying the customer data once in the body of the report, I had to separate the customer data from the detail data in two separate queries and past the key fields to the detail query to get the report breaking correctly. What has amaized me is that there is so little documentation about why this is necessary and no forums that would tell me why. Everybody seemed to know this was the way to do it but not as a general approach to building reports.

We can use Rectangle for the page breaks.
