Sub Newbie question

  • Hi.

I recently discovered an old version of SQL Server in the company storeroom. Brand new box, unopened version 4.5. Can this be upgraded? Are the licenses still good? Or should I just pitch the thing out? Thanks!

  • You might get an upgrade, but I doubt they'd give you much credit. If you want to try, I'd contact Microsoft.

But be ready to pitch it.

If you decide to pitch it, actually let me know. I'll trade you an SSC shirt for the box 🙂

  • I'll throw in 2 MS t-shirts from PASS 2007 if you send it to me instead ;).

  • Thanks for the info.

I spent about an hour on the Microsoft web site trying to find some information. I probably wasn't looking in the right place but I found nothing.

So, I'm up to two T-shirts. Pretty tempting. That would be about $1,750 per shirt. But, hey, as you can see, it wouldn't be the dumbest business move I've ever made.

    Anybody good for three T-shirts?

    A hat maybe?

  • Oh believe you me, they are worth it ;).

  • I could go three! I'll throw in some books as well 🙂

At the very least, can you post a picture to this SQLBay auction??

  • Ya I want to see this too!

It was only worth that when you could still use it. Now, if you can actually get that db up and running, it might be worth something. I suggest you take the shirts and 😀

  • Now that's a blow below the belt... of course I was not even born when that program was created so I don't have much arguments for it either ;).

  • Given that version should have been released somewhere in the 93-95 range.

1993 - SQL Server 4.21 for Windows NT

    1995 - SQL Server 6.0, codenamed SQL95

So that puts you at 12?

  • Something like that. Don't you hate that when you have to ask your mommy to go to a conference like PASS :hehe:?

  • Gee. I was kinda holding out for a hat or maybe a coffee mug. I mean really. OS/2 is included right inside the box! On floppies!

    🙂

  • Floppy? whats' that :w00t:?

  • I was reading the license agreement and it says if I don't agree with the terms of the license I can promptly return it for a refund. Hmm. I wonder what their definition of promptly is.

    :Wow:
