Strange log extension

    Hello all.

    I recently noticed that our TSM backup was not up a file.  While this is not strange at all I noticed that the file was in the directory that I use to hold an application DB trans log.  In fact it had the same name as the log but had an extension of .idf. 

    Going into the server itself I expected to see my log file AND this new file.  Instead I discovered that my SQL log file has an extension of .idf. 

    Has anyone ever seen this before?  If so, what kind of trouble can it cause and how did you fix it?

    Is the transaction backup coming from the maintenance plan job? there is the option "Backup file extension",  I have TRN, maybe you have IDF, check there.
