Strange connectivity issue on Win2003 server

  • Just deployed sql2000 with SP 2 on a brand new Win2003 server.  I could not install SP3 due to software issues.

On the server everything appears fine, but when I try to reference it in Enterprise Manager on my XP desktop, it says "Server does not exist."

I get the same error when trying to configure an ODBC setting from my desktop to the new server.

Anyone experience this?  I hope SP3 is not the answer.

  • Unfortunately, that is the answer if you're using TCP/IP as the network library. Windows Server 2003 blocks the TCP and UDP ports for SQL Server if it's prior to SP3.

You may not be able to connect to an instance of SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 or earlier that is installed on a Windows Server 2003 computer through the TCP/IP port (884012)

  • Unfortunately, you are correct.  After I installed the service pack, the problem went away.   Our software does not support that version of SQL2000, but since I don't wish to downgrade the server to win2000, I had no choice.  I hope everything still works...
