Stopping SQL Services in a clustered environment.

  • What is the 'correct' way to stop the SQL Server services in a clustered environment ? We need to stop SQL Server but keep the servers in the cluster up for some maintenance on the server?  I have never had to do this before ...... Won't stopping them in the service panel cause the cluster to restart them ?

  • I always stop and start the clustered SQL servers (virtual servers) in Cluster Admin.

  • Anytime I need to stop/start the Virtual SQL servers in our cluster I also do it thru Cluster Admin.. If you try to stop the service thru EM you will end up getting error stating that it is not installed as a service. I believe this is inherent as a function of clustering (if it did stop cluster would think it is failing and would try to failover).
