I was wondering if anyone had a good way to check on SQL SERVER, via daemon or service and to start/stop the DB remotely via daemon or service ( WINDOWS ONLY I have rc.d scripts on linux box)

DMO has some objects that expose the service status.

Task Scheduler with PSService (http://www.sysinternals.com) comes immediately to mind. There are also some tools in the resource kit.
