I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this whole series! Thank you! (This one was most timely and informative.)
A couple very minor candidate typographical corrections:
Figure 3 caption looks like it's a holdover from the previous article.
In the "Review the Database Mail Logs", I think msdb..sysmail_event_system should be msdb..sysmail_event_log (At least it appears that way in my SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 R2 instances.)

Indeed - my mistake on the caption - it should say "Figure 3: New Database Mail Account". I'll get that changed.

Yes, looks like an editing error, it absolutely should say sysmail_event_log.

If you're creating a standalone cloud-based server, would it also need Exchange running on it to have everything supported?
