SSRS Security configuration

  • I'm running SQL standard 2014 and on the same server I have configured SSRS. Everything is running fine no issues including my //ServerName/reports webpage.

The problem I'm having is limiting the access per group to just certain folders. From what I already know I need to add a group to Home> Folder Settings> New Role Assignment - then add the group with Browse rights. The problem I have with this is this new group now has access to every link and folder on the Home Page.

Will I need to remove the group from all but the folder they need access to? I have a lot of folders and was expecting this security access to be the same or similar to AD and sharing out a folder?

Again... everything works just asking if I missed something that would make my life easier setting up security.

  • Figured it out!

So as we all know adding a user/group to the Home page will give said user/group access to all reports on the Home page. I created local groups on the server and then added the domain group to it.. for example let say I have a AD group called ReportUsers, I created a group on my SSRS server called L_ReportUsers (L for local) and then added the AD group it. When you do this it adds the group to the Home page but they have access to nothing. I then added the L_ReportsUsers to the folder I wanted them to have access to.

Doing it this way I don't have to worry about missing someone or group having access to reports they shouldn't.
