We want to use Report Builder to allow people to create ad-hoc reports from a database. I created an account in SSMS and gave it datareader role to a particular database. I then created a data source in Reporting Services and chose ‘credentials stored securely in the report server’. Within Report Builder that data source is now available. Here is the issue – we never, ever want the end user to know what the username/password is/are. However, in order to create a dataset using the shared data source, you have to input the username/password. I am fairly new to using SSRS so I am really hoping that there is a way to embed the login credentials somehow so the end-user will never see them and will never be asked to supply them.

There is an option to "hide" the data source in the list view (I believe you drill down to it via properties when you view the "Show details"). As long as you haven't granted the user group has only been granted "Browser" to the SSRS site, they should not see the data sources

I tried Browser only right and they cannot see the data source in SSRS, but they also cannot see the data source with Report Builder. I gave the group Browser and Report Builder rights and still no good. I finally gave them Browse, Report Builder, and My Reports and finally they could see the data source and were able to use it within report Builder. I did see where you could hide the data source in Tile View, which is really good. However, if the user clicks on Details View, they can once again see and consequently open the data source properties and clearly view the connection string where the credentials are. If only users could be trusted to not screw around with things our lives would be so much easier!!!!!!!!!! Any other suggestions?

Do they have to have access to the data source int he report builder? Can't you force it to use one and remove their permissions to view it altogether?

Yes, they need access to the data source as they are going to be creating ad-hoc reports on their own.
