In an existing ssrs 2008 report, there currently is a link that the user can click on and be forwarded to a report that contains more detail about the record that is selected.
Now the user wants to be able to return to the original ssrs 2008 report that they started with showing all the same exact data. The orginal report contains more rows since the record selected which is contained within an original group by school (school is a parameter on the original report).
Thus would you tell me and/or show me how to accomplish this goal?

Are you just talking about drilldown reports?

These are not drilldown or subreports. These are independent reports.

Are you using the action functionality on the object? And selecting the go to report option?
Any time I have done that then just using the browser back button returns then to the same place they were in the report. Albeit this is with later versions of SQl Server and using IE - it doesn't work correctly using Chrome.
If this doesn't work you could try opening the report in a new window, but this can get complicated depending on parameters you have to pass.
