Within the SSMS layout I would like to have the windows split for the Object Explorer and the Registered Servers. When dragging and dropping it only tabs these two panes at the bottom where I have to click to see on or the other.
What am I doing wrong to resolve this and get the layout I like the best.

When dragging and dropping the Registered Servers window I was placing positioning it over the wrong area that I wanted. It would highlight the whole column pane instead of just half of the pane to give it the split positioning. When docking a floating window/pane to get the split look you would position the floating window in the middle so that it highlights only half of the window pane.
I hope that helps.

My explanation was incorrect.
For the split look to occur you would take the floating window and place it over the bottom portion of of the rectangular icons on the SSMS surface. If you mouse over the bottom arrowed icon you can select the window location, and you will see the window destination highlighted.
