Sue_H - Wednesday, August 15, 2018 11:57 AMjasona.work - Tuesday, August 14, 2018 8:21 AMYeah, we're locked down so tight that even "Run as Administrator" or having someone with actual local Admin rights already, doesn't work.
I think more shops are getting locked down to that extent as you used to be able to get around the policies for software restrictions by hacking the registry. I think there is a template where you can disable the local admin installs as well editing the registry. I'm curious though as I've usually been fine with installs using RunAs - Do you guys just do installs through GPO?
Still glad you mentioned it as I keep forgetting about the software restriction policies and most places I've seen do have some level of the restrictions in place.

The last time I needed SSMS installed (we were migrating from 2008R2 to 2012, then sort of skipped to 2014, long story) they pushed the install through System Center. Which of course, because of how *that* works, involved pushing the entire install CD to local drives, then running the installs. I'm almost afraid to find out what's going to happen when we finally start making the move to SQL 2017 and need SSMS. With it not being "part of" the SQL media, they may require it to get it's own "authorization" on our network.
Said authorizations can take several *months* to get approved...

Sue_H - Wednesday, August 15, 2018 7:29 AMhurricaneDBA - Wednesday, August 15, 2018 7:16 AMI stand mistaken 😇KalNo worries 🙂 I've seen seen that be confused before as SQL Server is only 64 bit now. SSMS is stuck at 32 bit. As of this date - since someone will post something to this thread in 10 years saying it's not the case.
Don't bother trying to track down which service - it's likely to be more than one anyway. Thanks for trying to track it down though and at least all is good. For now.Sue
Hi Sue
When i have a problem to resolve i usually dont move on until i get it solved 🙂
Today i noticed while installing SSMS and when it was hanging at the Visual Studio shell segment that there were 3 tasks:
Windows installer
Windows installer (32 bit)
Windows installer (32 bit)
I killed the second installer task and it didnt get killed but it made the installation proceed
Can someone else test this?
You must clear the temp location under :
C:\Users\user_ID\AppData\Local\Temp
Disable the antivirus
Run setup and when it reaches the hanging on Visual Studio 2015 Isolated Shell you kill one of the 32 bit windows installer tasks
I am curious to know if anyone else will get what i got
Good luck everyone
Kal

Why am I not surprised you kept with it? 🙂
I'm going to play with it later today on a Windows 10 PC and see if I can't get the same problem or at least watch the processes with Process Monitor.
