Hi
I have installed SQL 2008 on a stand alone test machine. But my ssms.exe is getting renamed as ssms.exe.bak and the session is getting closed.
Please suggest if anyone ever came across this behaviour.

Have never seen this myself, but if an executable it being renamed, could this be the result of some kind of Virus Scanning software if it suspects (rightly or wrongly) that the SSMS.EXE is infected?

Have you got any jobs scheduled that manipulated sql server services. check out any sql agent jobs and also dont include your sql server files when you are scanning your computer with any anti virus.

The only time I've seen something like this automated is while using a file editor which had an option to make a backup of the file before opening it.
Are you using any third party tool to fire up SSMS?

No, its native SSMS.exe only...
