SSMS 2014 - The application cannot start

    Has anyone else experienced this error when trying to open SSMS? Was working fine earlier. I have tried uninstall/reinstall, a few reboots,repairing the install, etc.

    Quick question, how are you invoking the SSMS, by clicking a menu item or short-cut?

    If so, right click on the menu item/short-cut, select Properties and Open File Location. Then right click on the SSMS.exe and select Properties. The Details tab will tell you if it is the right version and obviously if it does not find the target, then you know what is wrong;-)

    If you are invoking it by pressing the Win/start button and typing in SSMS, you can right click on the SSMS icon when it appears, select Properties and Details.

    I find that wrong/obsolete links are often the issue after upgrades.

    Hi Eirikur,

    You were half right, but it was right enough to get things working. The versions and paths both matched, but for some reason SSMS would run directly from the .exe in the folder. What had me thinking it was something worse is that the splash screen would appear and then the error message would pop up. Fun way to spend a holiday 😛

    Sorry but what do you mean by "holiday"?:-D

    Rings a bell, check the PATH in the environmental variables, or add the ...\blah\blah\120\Tools\Binn\ManagementStudio\ to the PATH or as a Start In property of the short-cut.
