SSMS 2012 Vs 2008

Anyone else has the same experience?

    Harder how?

  • Not me

  • In SQL 2008 SSMS, when I want to restore a database from another database, or a file from a device,

I click the database that I want to restore, then click restore database, on the next screen, I choose the source database or device I want to, it is very easy and straight forward.

But for SQL 2012 SSMS, I do the same way, that is click the database that I want to restore, then click restore database, on the next screen, I change the source to another database, then the destination databse name changed too as the same as source. I have to change back the destinatation name to the database name I want, but when I click files tab, nothing shown.

    What could be wrong?

    Thanks

  • I see your point. I never use SSMS this way, did not notice that difference. If using SSMS GUI, I generally choose "restore database" from the "databases" folder, and then specify both source and dest--that process is not any worse in 2012 than in 2008.

  • I also tried your way.

That is click databases, - restore database, I specify both the source databse and destination databse,

the list of backup file is shown, then I chose the one, but on next screen Files tab, I see nothing.

    This is really confusing.

Please see my attached screen shot.

  • I confirm your results again. Sorry...I never have sourced from a database before--just never occurred to me. I have always used "device" button & then picked backup file(s). This seems to work ok, populates files on 2nd tab.

  • Thanks Mike for the confirm of the result.

I can choose device files to restore from too, that is no problem.

But when restore a database from another database, SQL 2012 is certainly not as handy as I used SSMS 2008. Not sure why this feature is missing.

We have some databases are basically similar on our production server for some applications.

For example We have a database called Versatrans, the other one VersatransState, VerstransPlanning

So we occasionlly need to restore database VersatransPlanning from the Versatrans, for people to work on that, so in this case, we need to restore a database from another database.

  • I used to use the SSMS GUI; however, now I am a script kiddy and use my scripts!
