SSIS stops with communication link failure if I lock my PC whilst it's running

  • Hi Guys,

I'm updating my dev server with data from a production environment via the SSIS Wizard out of the 2012 Express Management Studio.

This takes some time to complete but if I lock my desktop the job ends with a communication link failure from the host machine (which I assume is my desktop)

Has anyone else come across this? I think it must be a behaviour of the Windows 7 x64 software firewall or something along those lines.

I'll continue looking but so far the mighty Google has failed me - probably just typing in the wrong questions!

  • If you lock your computer, it might go to sleep after a while.

You can check the power management of the computer to see if the network adapter is disabled when the PC goes to sleep.

  • Thanks Koen,

Sleep mode is disabled and I've even told the network adapter never to shut off now.

It would appear it's doing it even if the SSIS application looses focus - I am having to make the SSIS window the active window on the screen or I get a communication link failure within seconds of opening chrome or outlook etc.

    Most irksome!

I'll do my future data copies with openquery instead!

    That is not normal behaviour.

So you are using the import/export wizard in SSMS and once you click away, it fails?

  • yep exactly, within a few seconds it would seem. It may be a completely random unrelated intermittent issue which just so happens to have occurred at those times but I just ran the job again with SSIS wizard having focus, moving my mouse every so often so as to discourage the screensaver from popping up and it completed fine.

never mind eh the data copy has finished now. Probably some traffic management / software firewall or similar that our tech services team have installed on the PCs of us evil/retarded/virus-prone/IT-illiterate programmers 😉
