I tried it on a Server that I set up at the beginning of the month and I did not have the issue.
I broke up the package quickly on that Server into 3 packages and I still have the problem.
I kept getting the message Visual Studio needs to restart, find a solution or restart.
So I have the issue on my PC and a Development DB Server which I have been working from.
I recall that BIDS crashed and I started having the problem.
Checked the Windows Application Log and no hints.

I have been having headaches with a new installation of BIDS on my laptop. Whenever I opened a package from a solution file, the validation would take forever and eventually hang-up the BIDS environment. I found that by editing the hosts file under system32/drivers/etc fixed the issue. Now loading a package in the designer takes seconds as compared to hours before and no lock-up of BIDS.

We had the same problems. Tried everything disabling parts of bids, removing bids, cleaned registry, latest SP with CU, checked hardware, battery cache raidcontroller ...., but adding an entry to the servers hosts file did the job: 127.0.0.1 a3842.akami.atom86.net and everything responses normal.
