  • Gosh... I went back and looked at one of the links for SQL Server questions and answers. Part of the reason that I recommend NOT using such Q'n'A sites is because (drum roll please)... they have the wrong bloody answers.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

At least that makes it easy to reject those candidates who use them, so maybe not such a bad thing after all.

The absence of consumable DDL, sample data and desired results is, however, evidence of the absence of my response

I guess it will be easy to sort people who use those Q&A sites out in interviews.

Not only because of what Phil said - they give incorrect or incomplete answers - but because they can probably only answer the high level questions. As soon as you dig a bit deeper they fall rather quickly through their disguise.

    Especially to questions like this:

"Give me an example of a SSIS package that you created and how did you troubleshoot it if there were issues on the server?"

Need an answer? No, you need a question

How well I know that. 🙂 I just hadn't really thought about how all these Q'n'A sites with the wrong answers may actually be doing me a favor.
