The install guide does say that it will be installed side-by-side with earlier versions though, if they already exist on your system. Does this mean you'd still be able to connect to SQL Server 2000 in SSIS 2012 using the previous Native Client?

I believe you can. Haven't tested it myself to be honest (I don't have SQL 2000 installations).
But I think it is interesting to know. Say your planning to migrate some 2000 instances to a new server. You install SQL Server 2012 on the new server and fire up SSIS to move all the data. Whoopsies 😀

While the question was great, the answer was wrong, two versions back from 2012 is 2008 2005 is not supported accroding to your reference.
Thanks for the question though.

You forget that SQL Server 2008R2 counts as a seperate value.
(I don't agree with the policy, I'm just explaining it).

Good question Koen... I didn't know it only supported a limited set of versions. Thanks.

I'm always optimistic about backwards compatability too, and if I had been often let down I would have changed to pessimism. Maybe SSIS is an area in which pessimism is appropriate, unlike most of SQL Server? (I got this one wrong, of course, because I'm still optimistic - that may be a result of my lack of experience with SSIS.)
