We're using VS 2013 online. That works great for VS 2012. However SSIS is done through SSDT with a VS 2010 shell. Background info I know.
The URL to connect to TFS is just fine and dandy when I connect in Visual Studio 2012. Create the server and all is well.
When I try to use the same URL in SSDT it gives me a connection error.
Has anyone done this kind of connection and if so how the heck do I accomplish it?

I just did a quick test and created a connection to my VS Online collection with VS 2010 and created an SSIS project that was connected to VS 2013 online no problem.
Are you up to date with the VS 2010 shell?

I should be.
Microsoft Visual Studio version 10.0.40219.1 SP1Rel
I did the SQL 2012 install with SP1 and reinstalled SP1 per many blog posts.
