Error Sending e-mail.
CDO.Message.1
The transport lost its connection to the server.
Does anyone know how to trouble shoot this? It will work most of the time but errors probably 25%. I looked at the network traffic but do not see anything significant

Is this a SMTP server on your local network, or are you across a WAN/MAN, or is it your ISP's SMTP server?
If it's yours, check your SMTP server log for bad mail, send failures, etc at that time. Is your amial server gettign slammed by a lot os Spam at that time? How big is the mail you are trying to send? Is it constantly the same size, or will it sometimes be larger?

it is just text and here is the weird thing. I have found that the procedure will fail intermidently. If I hit the proc multiple times it will work once or twice then fail. I can ping the e-mail server every time the proc fails. I do not think it is the proc becuase it usually works. It seems to be the connectivity. any ideas?

Could be a simple as a bad cable, or as complex as a switch with a bad port, An intremitently screaming NIC, router etc.
Simply put, It could be justy about anything in between your SQL server and the SMTP server. I'd suggest working with you Network/Server Admins and looking at any log you can get your hands on, checking each device, cable, etc.
If you don't already have some sort of Network Monitoring goign on, I'd suggest downloading a copy of MRTG and doing some network bandwidth monitoring. Something like that may be able to point you in a direction a bit more quickly.

I have been watching the Nic and it does not look like that much on my side. I am going to work with the server admin for e-mail to see if it is something more on his side. It is just weird that this has just started to happen. For months it was working and now it is intermitent. Almost like you said a device is failing.

The e-mail server admin did something that freed up the e-mails on his side. Basically a reboot or something. Now it is working normally.
