SQLRAP

  • Does anyone know anything about the Risk Assessment Program from Microsoft for SQL and what they look at and is it worth doing?

    Thanks

  • Checkout the link..........

  • This link is for a US government department, it doesn't mention Microsoft or SQL.

I was more asking if anyone has used Microsofts service for SQLRAP or knew anything about it.

    Thanks anyway

I was more asking if anyone has used Microsofts service for SQLRAP or knew anything about it.

I've had a couple done. I used to work for a Premier client, so we got them free with the contract.

If you know everything that happens in your database, if you can smell a bad setting a mile away, if you're totally sure that everything from SQL to OS is configured optimally, you'll get no benefit from it.

If, however, you've not sure what settings are what and how they should be, it may well be very useful. You will get a doorstop of a document at the end (if you print it, they're usually electronic). The doc will detail just about every setting that's not recommended, why it's a problem and what you should do.

  • Thanks, we get it free on contract here and they're booked in for next month, I was a bit skeptical at first but I'm now quite looking forward to it as I think I will learn something.

    Thanks

  • Ask to be involved in the data capture for it. You probably would be anyway.

  • Hi,

How n where can we get this SQLRAP tool.

  • You have to ask Microsoft to come and do it for you, it's a bit of consultancy on their part, you can download the description, which doesn't tell you much about the processes but just what service they offer:

We got it as part of a support contract but I assume you can also pay for it separately.

It's not a tool. It's a service offered by Microsoft's Premier Support people. I don't know if you can get an evaluation without being a premier client. If you can it won't be cheap.

  • Microsoft Consulting has a number of RAP services. SQL, Exchange and Active Directory are all worthwhile.

MS will usually leave the data gathering tool behind when they're done. It is a useful benchmark to measure your progress against the recommendations
