SQLMail questions

  • Hey all,

I am ashamed to say that in my ~5 years as a DBA, I've never installed SQLMail. I've always used cdo sysmail and/or xpsmtpfor SQL2000. Obviously 2005/2008 we got database mail which makes life incredibly easy.

Anyways, I had to bring up a new SQL2000 environment (don't ask), and I wanted to get mail setup. While I realize xpsmtp is a better choice, I lose the ability to use operators for job notifications and alerts. Yeah I could add custom job steps, but this is going to be a dying environment and I'd prefer to stay away from it as much as I can.

    So, couple things.

    - Is there a way to use xpsmtp for operators?

    - Do I really have to install outlook on the server? If so, is it true that Outlook 2000 is the only version without problems? I've been searching a bit and finding lots of random problems from people running 2003/2007.

    Thanks all

  • I wouldn't be ashamed, I'd be proud.:-D

I don't how to or if you can use xpsmtp for operators/alerts, but I don't think there is.

You do have to install Outlook to use SQLMail. My only experience has been with Outlook 2000, so I can't speak about using any other version of Outlook.

Wish I could be more help.

  • Thanks Jack, appreciate the response.

Right now my biggest concern is that I can't find an install for Office 2000. It's not even available on MSDN anymore. So I'm not sure If I should install 2003 at this point. I think I'm just going to give it a shot and see what happens.

  • I'd go for it. It can't hurt too much. 😛
