  • Nope, kind of ironic considering I live in wales. But weekends are time with family and when I saw that Unisys are helping to sponsor it, that made the decision easier.

  • I'm curious... what do you have against UniSys?

I'm curious... what do you have against UniSys?

I worked for a company where UNISYS were doing a consolidation project, before I had started there, the unisys project manager had managed to alienate both DBA teams and had basically resorted to shouting at them to get things done.

I ended up drawing the short straw and ended up being the sole DBA assigned to that particular project. The technical architects thought they knew everything, I had a 80+ page build document that I have to follow, which was one of the worst documents I had ever seen. I ended up locking down the server per requirements, and next day, one of the technical architects had backed out all of my security changes. I installed about 18 instances that day on this one unisys box, including full lock down and i mean everything possible was locked down.

I was told to give the technical architects sysadmin access by putting them in the DBA Group, which would have given them access to all of our production servers and up to about 500 others.

When I said I would be unable to do that due to company security guidelines. I was told that I was hindering the project and that I was useless and pathetic, they would do it themselves and get me off the project.

It got to the stage, where they would ignore me, and talk as if I wasnt there and they were all grouped around me deskwise. None of the other DBA's would talk to them and no other DBA would agree to work on the project.

One day, He just stood there and started shouting, all of the people on the entire floor just turned away and tried to ignore what was going on. I was still shaking with anger, 10 minutes after he had finished telling me how useless I was. the management knew there was a problem but because of legal issues contractual wise, i was told to try and get on with it and ignore him. but it was pretty much the last straw, I started to hate going into work. So after that outburst, I walked over to my manager at the time, and told him I am going. and I walked out...

One of the best companies I had ever worked for, and totally ruined because of Unisys, to this day. I remember all there names. and I never work for/go to anything/company where unisys is involved.

and to cap it all, in interviews after that, I mentioned my experiences with unisys and other companies have also had bad experiences with them as well.

I had never ever walked out on a contract in over 16 years of contracting and I broke that by meeting a project manager who thought he could get things done by intimidation.

  • Zowie! I've worked for some bad companies before but never had anything quite that bad happen. Usually the aberrant manager got educated or greased long before something that bad would happen.

Really sorry to hear that anyone has to go through that kind of abuse. I've got a friend that works for UniSys here in the States and he's one of those kinds of folks that wouldn't say a bad thing about a company even if they redirected their septic system to his shower... I've got to ask him if he's getting the same kind of treatment because he'd never volunteer the info.

Thanks for taking the time to write about your experience on that.

  • I would have gone to the Saturday one, but I have tickets to Motorhead on the Friday night in Leeds, and hence wouldn't be able to get to the event till midday.

  • Remember that Unisys isn't just one entity. It's composed of lots of people, some good, some bad. I have some friends at Unisys that would be on your side.

Maybe m8, but I will keep my distance, not sure what would happen If I met the same people again. anyways even though I am not going, still interested in what people gain out of it.

Hopefully after the event people will share their experiences here.
