SQL2000 Standard vs Developer

  • I have a W2K3 server w/ SQL2k Std on it. The problem I'm having is that SQL2K std on it only allows for 2GB of memory in SQL. I have jobs taking a long time to run and I have users that are trying to develop complaining of it being slow. Does anybody know if I can put SQL2k Developer on this server or does it take a totally different license or can I use the current license I have. By putting SQL2k Developer on there it would allow me to use up to 32 gb of memory and my server currently has 16gb on it.

  • It's not legal to use a Developer license for 'production'. Is moving to SQL Server 2005 an option?

Have you looked at other ways to optimize/tune the workload?

  • This would be on my development server. NOt used for production purposes at all. Only used for my analysts to design and write the code and test it. We then put it up to another server for user testing before going to production.

Moving to 2005 is not an option as we are going to be phasing ou this software in 2 yrs and of course my company doesn't want to spend any money with something thats going to be going out the door.

  • Your standard edition license does not cover you for dev edition however, a dev edition licenses are ony like $50.

  • You should be OK, then. I think the licensing requires each developer to have their own license, but as stated above, they're only about $50.

Your problem may be that those licenses might be hard to locate. I'm not sure anyone is actively selling them for SQL Server 2000 anymore. Might require a scavenger hunt.

  • I know for my SQL2k5 servers I have to buy 2008 licenses. Those should cover 2000 as well right?

  • Correct your 2008 licenses should be downgradeable.
