SQL State

  • I have two Windows 2003 servers with SQL Server 2000 sp 4 installed.  Windows 2003 sp1 was applied  and now when I open Enterprise manager the server icon for those two servers no longer shows the status indicator.  When I click on either server I get the annoying "The SQL Server \\xxxx is not known to be running.  Are you sure you wish to connect?"  Is anyone else getting this?

  • right click on server->Edit SQL Server Registration properties->Display SQL Server State in console..

The "Display SQL Server state in console" checkbox allows you to enable or disable the automatic display of status icons. If you disable this option the server's icon will appear without a status indicator when you open Enterprise Manager.

  • The checkbox to display the SQL Server state in the console is enabled for both servers.  This behavior or non-behavior started after the application of Windows 2003 sp1 to the servers.

  • Neither server is clustered.  I assume that's the Cluster log the article is referring to.  Nor am I getting any errors in SQL Server Logs.

  • when you right click on the server registration does it display the status icon as running?

If not you might try deleting sql server registration and register again ...(may be u can try using the ip and an alias name from client network utility)...

  • No, when I right click I get the menu.

I deleted it, reregistered it with the ip address, alias name (both TCPIP and Named Pipes) and using sa login, deleting between each type I tried.  Still no status indicator.

I suspect that Windows 2003 SP 1 has locked down some service thingie that SQL Server can no longer poll, but I can't figure out what that is.

The status indicator on SQL Agent is behaving similarly.  Generally there is a green or red indicator when the SQL Agent service is on or off.  Now I have no indicator.
