Sql Srv 2000 Enterprise Mgr Backups

  • I have used Enterprise Manager for SQL Server 2000 to generate backups via Database Maintenance scripts. The backups seem to be working correctly except for one small glitch..the names that Enterprise Manager generates for the backup file. EM seems to create a backup file name using the database name_db_yyyymmddhhmm.bak Normally unique names would not cause an issue but after the backup is done to a folder, then TSM *tivoli storage manager) is used to copy the backup files off of the server. The manager of the TSM backups says that since each backup has a unique name, it just keeps adding each file to its holding area and he is upset about having such a "space" hog. I have looked and have not been able to find where I can stop the timestamp from being added to the backup file name.. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

  • We use TSM and the unique filenames are a blessing as we may need to go back to a particular day. You can setup a special retention polocy (which is what he maybe complaining about) for the .bak files and retain less versions. We also delete them as soon as the new one is written, so that also keeps them in the "system" for less time.

You might also look at SQL Litespeed. It can substantially reduce tape cost. On our TSM systems, the product paid for itself about 5 times over in a single year.
