SQL Server Upgrade

  • We are currently running a web front-end with a SQL back-end on a quad processor (4 x 900Mhz) machine. Bottlenecks on the current system are processor and disk I/O.

The database is running in a RAID 10 array and I do not see much improvement in disk I/O.

We would like to save some money and migrate to a dual processor (2 x 2700Mhz) machine.

Has anybody done a similar migration?

I it a huge mistate to go from a quad processor to dual processor system?

    Thanks,

  • Most modern boxes will come with hyperthreading so you'll almost get a 4 way upgrade.

I did a similar upgrade, for different reasons, and queries which took over an hour ran in seconds.

  • Not to mention the HUGE licensing savings if you are doing per processor licensing.

I'm just going through the process at the moment, moving from a Quad P3-Xeon 700 Mhz to a Dual P4-Xeon 3.2 Ghz
