Is there any documentation that shows the format of the log file? Are there any open source programs that can read the log file?

No open source products that I know of....I have heard that Lumigent's LogExplorer does a good job, but I understand that it can only read logs created AFTER it has been installed.
I've heard of at least one other log reader, but I can't remember the name or how it works.

Anybody use DBCC LOG and know its output format?

I took a look at it once and DBCC LOG really doesn't provide much of anything usable.

I agree about DBCC LOG, but here's a link to the syntax for it:
