I have been asked about service pack 4 for SQL2005:
1)is the patch needed?
2) Are there issues with the patch?
3) Is the service pack supported for our applications?
4) Is there a testing procedure I should implement?
Any thoughts/comments/expieriences greatly appreciated..

Hi,
It depends upon what application you are using and with what technologies the your application is being integrated with. Afetr the upgradation of SP4 a database testing can favour you to make sure your application supports it.

I found a bug in sp4.
The packages doesnt open in it even if we install the sql 2000 dts designer components.

1)is the patch needed? - Depending on what features of SQL Server 2005 you are currently using. Please review the following for the list of "bugs fixed" by Microsoft - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2463332
2) Are there issues with the patch? - To date there does not seem to be any noteworthy bugs associated with the Service Pack. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do full on testing prior to applying.
3) Is the service pack supported for our applications? - Only your ISV can answer that for you.
4) Is there a testing procedure I should implement? - As with any Service Pack or upgrade a full testing should be implemented. Best practice is to apply the Service Pack to a test/development/QA environment prior to releasing to Production. At this time there does NOT appear to be a roll-back plan from SP4 to SP3
