  can someone recommend a free utility to perform a security scan on SQL servers? we have someone on the department that does a simple scan on a periodic basis and we do an official one once a year from a consulting company. we'd like to do one ourselves just to make sure that when someone else does it, nothing SQL stands out. dont care if it runs on Windows or linux

  I can recommend two. If you want a GUI on it, use the Quest tool:

  Discovery Wizard for SQL Server[/url]

  If you want to automate it, use SQLPing3's command-line version. BTW, the Quest tool uses licensed components from SQLPing:
