I have always had a problem accessing my sql server after renaming mysystem.
Now I need to rename my system and I have some iportant databases which I must loss afterall. How do I rename my computer and still have my sql server working and accessible?

This is actually pretty simple. SQL Server stores it's name in master.dbo.sysservers using the entry that is set as local to respond to (in addition to localhost and (local) ).

connect to SQL as sa,

run

sp_dropserver <current name>

go

sp_addserver <new name>, Local

then rename the server and reboot.
