we have discovered a trace that sombody else has started, however the trace cannot be stopped, as the option is grayed out on the file menu, how can we stop this through SQL

You can alter the statuses of traces with sp_trace_setstatus (I think that's where the _ are). See Books Online for details, I can never remember the parameters offhand.

IIRC 0 stops, 2 deletes the trace definition.
Takes both commands to completely eliminate the trace from the system.
Why don't you find the person who started it and ask him to spot it assuming he has no reason to keep it going?
