Yes, let's have more PS with SQL questions. I don't really use it either, but it would be good to understand it. But this one was easy to get right.
It seems to me that PS ISE can't use shared store or named pipes, only tcp/ip (and maybe also http/https connections to SQL Server) but I may have that completely wrong - so I have to specify the server name even when it's the server PS ISE is running on. That strikes me as a nuisance, although I might have had a different view if it had been around in the years (2002 to 2005) when I was developing the initial Neos strategy for managing lots of remote servers running SQL. (and it also seems to me that PS as opposed to PS ISE is not very interesting - because I can't see anyway of doing anything much without ISE - including I can't see how this question works unless it assumes ISE).
