I was tasked with coming up with specs for a SQL Server on VMware. I don't know much about the application or the number of transactions per day. I have no experience with SQL Server on a virtual machine. What specs would you start off with for testing? There will be about 40 concurrent users and 3 databases.
I was thinking 8 or 12 CPUs with 16GB of RAM.
Thoughts?

what edition\version VMWare are you planning?
most of the common ESX licences only allow up to 4 way SMP for VMs.
2vCPUs and 8GB RAM should be enough i would have thought
