SQL Server on NON Domain Computer

  • I have a system administrator that likes to push group policy updates all the time and sometimes the servers are included in the group policy stuff. I'm afraid this is causing performance issues with one of my SQL servers. Would there be any disadvantages to setting the new server up outside of the domain?

I'm also considering using the core version of windows 2008 R2 (i'm installing sql server 2012) is it worth doing it this way or should I just use the standard windows 2008 install.

  • You wouldn't be able to use integrated security for access to the SQL Server, and the SQL Server would not be able to use a domain service account. There are a lot of disadvantages to this.

Why don't you just explore the possibility of having the system administrator NOT push group policy updates to SQL Servers? Fix the problem where it is, not where it isn't.
