Tragic that it isn't for real. Now the only viable choices for Linux are the free but limited functionality MySQL or the way overpriced with crappy admin tools Oracle. Would love to see more mainstream business tools available for Linux.

And, since then, Windows ships with SQLite and .NET runs almost everywhere.

I wish this wasn't an April Fool.
Microsoft does a lot more with the open-source community than it is credited with so I still have hope
December 26, 2015 at 3:29 am
I don't see that happening.
It is more likely to see SQL Server and Windows baked together into something you can put in a box than SQL Server being ported to Linux. Something like SQL Server running on Server Nano and SQL Server coming with a Server Nano license.
But related to Microsoft's work with open source, I agree. They do a lot more than they are credited for.

I fell for it.

An April Fools joke on Christmas certainly goes against the spirit of the season.

Today is the equivalent of April fools in Spain, Hispanic America and the Philippines. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fools%27_Day#Comparable_prank_days

Well, since the initial publication of this editorial back in 2005, we know have OS virtualization, which "clouds" the issue of "SQL Server running on Linux". 😉
