For SQL Server 2005 download from
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=184
For SQL Server 2008 download from
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27597
For SQL Server 2008 R2 download from
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26729
If you want the 64 bit version then download SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe
If you want the 32 bit version then download SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe
Please check the file names carefully before deciding which one you want to install. Since this is a brand new install I suggest you install SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 and download SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=26729

If you got Management Studio only you would need also SQL Server itself to be installed.

1. Open your SQL Server Configuration Manager(SSCM), make sure your SQL Server service is running.
2. Check if the Client Protocols are enabled in SSCM, especially the TCP/IP protocol.
3. When you are log into SQL Server from SQL Server Management Studio, in the ‘connect to Server’ view, please verify your server name is correct, the format is servername/instancename and make sure you have chosen the right authentication(which was enabled).
