sql sERVER mEMORY uSAGE

  • Hi Experts,

I am using SQL Server 2005 having a database of size less than 10GB and user connects less than 50.

    RAM :32GB

    Disk Space:360GB

The problem Is that SQL server is using more than 9GB of memory.

    Is that an issue?

Please advice on this . What is the normal memory usage of SQL Server?

    TIA

  • It shouldnt be a problem. SQL server uses as much as it needs and with the kind of RAM , it is happy...

Are you running X64 or x32 and is it windows Ent.Edition 2003 or R2 Ent Edition.

what about SQL is it Enterprise or Standard Edition: and x64 or x32.

  • It is not a problem, but why would you spend that kind of money and allocate those kinds of resources to support such a small system?

Are you looking at adding instances/databases to this server in the near future? Are you expecting a tremendous amount of growth that you need 360GB of storage?

If you are in fact looking to add instances/databases to this server, then make sure you limit each instance to a maximum amount of memory so that the total does not exceed 26-28GB (leave at least 4GB for the OS, and for multiple instances you would want to leave 6GB).

  • Thanks for the reply.

We are using x64 windows server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.

Can anyone please tell me the memory characteristics and management of SQL Server?

We are going to have a banking application to use this server thats why we use this much resource.

    TIA

  • Hi Ratheesh,

You are probably not in a position to be able to share the information with us but which Banking Application are you looking to deploy?

I may be able to provide you with specific advice so pleased feel free to send me a private message if you prefer.

The provider/source of the application should be able to provide you with what their minimum recommended configuration is in order to support their application platform?

To help you configure your SQL Server Platform take a look at the following Link:SQL Server Resources[/url]. There are also specific references to memory configuration articles and posts which will no doubt assist you.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
