SQL Server Management Studio (Unspecified Error)

  • Hi all,

I'm new to SQL Server and this forum so please go easy on me 🙂

I've been asked by my company to build a system using SQL Server 2005, bought the Microsoft DB Essentials Step By Step book and have installed SQL Server 2005 on my laptop. I'm struggling to get past Chapter Two ! as the book wants me to use the AdventureWorksDB. In the Management Studio I can select "Modify" on a table and can see all the details (ie. field type, length etc) however when I try and "Open" any table to see what data it contains I get an "Unspecified Error" message which is really annoying and exceptionally "useful" :w00t: as it doesn't give you any indication of where the problem lies. 0 rows are returned. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance, Rhodri.

    Version details :-

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.1399.00

Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.1399.00

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

    Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0

    Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180

    Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.1433

    Operating System 5.1.2600

I would recommending downloading and applying SP3 for 2005 first -

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ae7387c3-348c-4faa-8ae5-949fdfbe59c4&displaylang=en

Next I would grab the latest copies of the AdventureWorks database samples for 2005 from CodePlex -

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ae7387c3-348c-4faa-8ae5-949fdfbe59c4&displaylang=en

  • I believe the URL u are looking for is

    http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=4004

Here you can download the relevant adventure works DB:-D - I see the links above both points to SP3:-P

  • Thanks both, I shall give it a go 😎

  • Tried these installs, no joy, some of the service pack failed :crying: There must be something on my laptop that is causing the problems. Took a different approach and installed VMWARE and created a Windows 2000 virtual machine, installed SQL here and hey presto no problems. Ahh well at least I have a working environment to progress, maybe a rebuild of the laptop is in order  thanks for you support, I'm sure I'm going to have further questions. All the best, Rhodri.

  • Ty using IP address rather than hostname. I've had this problem twice, and it was resolved each time using IP address

  • You could update Internet Explorer. For security reasons, not for SQL
