SQL Server Licensing for Internet

  • I am trying to make sure all my licensing in order for SQL Server. If I have a machine that I am running ASP.NET and SQL server on (only server side code is accessing the database), does that count as one CAL, or do I have to get a processor license as everybody who goes to the website counts as a user.

  • If I understand the licensing properly, you will need to purchase SQL Server using per procosser licensing.  Use of multiplexing does not reduce the requirements, you have to base it on how many unique individuals will be getting data from your database.  Best thing you can do is check with Microsoft.

  • This white paper is the word from MS on licensing as far as I know.

  • Hmmm....sounds like I need a processor license. That sucks, that's alot of money for not alot of database usage.

  • The summary is that if you have un-authenticated users, meaning not in your AD forest, you need a processor license. If you have employees or partners, with AD accounts, you can use CALs.
